Not only is Thornhurst Township a beautiful place to live—with an abundance of running streams and forested land—but it also has a long and rich history that dates back to 1878. However, it might surprise you to know that the actual name of the township was originally Lehigh Township and didn’t actually take the name Thornhurst Township until 1996 to distinguish this township from one of the same name in neighboring Wayne County.

I’ve mentioned before that as of March, the Kalahari Resorts and Conventions in Pocono Manor would be the largest indoor water park in the United States. Poconos Neighborhood Spotlight: Tobyhanna Township

The name Tobyhanna Township has a nice ring to it—even if it doesn’t exactly flow easily from the lips. The township’s name has its origins in Native American language, roughly translated as, “a stream whose banks are fringed with alder". Those trees—and others—were later to play a significant role in the development of the area. For many years, however, the area was largely undeveloped with only 239 residents calling the township home in 1830. By 1900 the population was still below 900 residents.
