Can’t See the Forest for the Trees? Landscaping for Poconos Homes

Cant-see-the-forest-for-the-trees-landscaping-for-Poconos-homesIf you’re contemplating building a custom home in the Poconos there’s a good chance that the spectacular view have something to do with your plans. So wouldn’t it make sense to simply build you home in the middle of that great scenery and be done with it? Why in the world would you want to do anything to the property surrounding your home?

The answer, of course, depends greatly on the piece of property your house sits on. And your outdoor lifestyle can dictate the way your lot is landscaped as well. Let’s take a look at both scenarios.

Trees are one of the big draws to living in the Poconos, and there are acres upon acres of them here. And while there is no question that they are a feast for the eyes, some homeowners find that a home hidden in the trees to be a little too dark or claustrophobic for their tastes. Trees right up against your home can keep your home cooler in the summer, but they can also rob you of natural light—and in cases of high winds, can damage your home if they topple.

You’ve heard of not being able to see the forest for the trees? That can actually happen in a densely wooded area. If the trees are too close to your house and too dense, you could end up with an extremely limited view.

That doesn’t mean you have to clear-cut your lot, but you might want to establish a bit of a buffer between your home and the surrounding trees. And if you do take out some trees, you’ll want to consider what will take their place. A good landscape architect can help you design a space that blends with both your home and the surrounding area.

Your lifestyle also plays a factor. If you enjoy entertaining outside, you may want to give some thought to a patio area—or even create an outdoor kitchen and dining area where you can cook or enjoy a drink with friends and family.

Poet Joyce Kilmer (who grew up in New Jersey) famously wrote: “I think that I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree . . .” He’s probably right, but if all that greenery is just a bit monochromatic for you, you might want to add some splashes of color. Again, a landscaper can help you design a space that works well with your surroundings—and he or she can advise you about which plants and flowers flourish in this area.

Whether you already own your own lot, are looking for a lot, or are searching for an existing community in the Poconos, don’t forget about the landscaping around your home. If you handle it properly, it will enhance an already beautiful setting.
