The Best Fall Getaways in Pennsylvania

There are lots of great things to do in the Poconos all year long. The region really is a place for all seasons. There’s no denying, however, that autumn in the Poconos is pretty special. Things slow down just a bit and the colors really come to life. We’ll take a look at a few of the best fall getaways in Pennsylvania.

First, however, you may want to take a look at the essential guide to fall in the Poconos. It’s full of great ideas about different activities from wine tours to leaf peeping, to historical exploration, or late fall skiing. It even has ideas for indoor activities you may want to take care of as the mercury drops.

There has been a lot of talk about "Stay-cations" over the last few years. But if you live in or around the Poconos (even if you're in New York or Philadelphia) you can get away without traveling too far at all! And while the Poconos are nearby, you'll feel like you're in a completely different place!

Outdoor Getaways

For a lot of people, there's nothing more invigorating or relaxing than hitting the hiking trails and enjoying nature. Pennsylvania is home to some of the finest hiking trails anywhere! The Allegheny National Forest is a wonderful place to find scenic trails and view the fall foliage up close. You can choose the Kinzua Valley Trail, which for a pleasant seven-mile hike with great views of the trees. For the more adventurous (and fit!) there's the North Country National Scenic Trail—an epic 96.3-mile backpacking experience! This trail is well marked with signage and provides a tremendous way to immerse yourself in the colorful forest. If you're looking for something a little less strenuous, you may want to consider driving along the National Longhouse Scenic Byway: a 27-mile loop that traverses the forest and offers excellent overlooks with plenty of foliage. Click here for details about trails and other features of the park.

Romantic Getaways

Getting away doesn't have to mean forgetting about romance—or luxury. Several Poconos resorts specialize in creating the perfect setting for a romantic getaway for just the two of you.

The Lodge at Woodloch is one of those places that brings all of those things together in one beautiful and relaxing package. The 5-star hotel boasts a luxurious spa, elegant guest rooms, and delectable farm-to-table cuisine. You'll find refreshing relaxation at the onsite indoor-and-outdoor pools. Meals are a delight at the Lodge's Tree restaurant. And when the day is over you can fall asleep to the soothing sounds of the rock garden waterfall behind the resort. There are plenty of other activities to enjoy at the resort's private 15-acre lake, including kayaking, fly-fishing, and other water sports. Check their website for additional details.

Couples looking for the romantic atmosphere of an adults-only resort can unwind and rekindle their romance while secluded at a Pocono Mountain resort. Couples who prefer the quaint ambiance of a historic downtown inn or Poconos bed & breakfast will find a charming selection of places to stay in the Pocono Mountains.

One word of warning: If you visit the Poconos from New York or Philadelphia for a getaway, you may just find yourself wanting to stay. Here's a look at why people from New York and Philadelphia are moving to the Poconos!

See What Charlie Brown Missed

Maybe the reason that Charlie Brown and Linus were in the wrong place! They should have checked out The Great Pocono Pumpkin Festival at Country Junction that takes place September through October on weekdays and weekends. In addition to picking out the perfect pumpkin for Halloween, families can also go for a hayride, experience a Big Foot adventure, dig for buried treasure, roll in bumper-balls, and even play an escape room game. It’s a truly affordable getaway with weekday prices of $5 per person, and weekend prices of $10 per person (kids two and under are free). A lot of visitors say that Country Junction (the world’s largest general store) is worth a visit itself!
