Should You Buy a Poconos Vacation Home with Your Family?

Should-you-buy-a-vacation-home-with-your-family_.jpgThe Poconos Mountains are a favorite vacation destination for a lot of families in the New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania area. It’s not surprising that a significant number of people own vacation homes in the area.  Aside from the beauty of the region, there are so many activities to choose from (Take a look at our free A Guide to Area Activites download to see what I mean).

You may really like the idea of having a vacation get-away that you can retreat to throughout the year—but perhaps you wonder if you can justify a vacation home that you only use part time. Does something like that really make sense?

One thing to consider is that if you live in New York, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania, the Poconos are easy to access—usually within a couple of hours (depending on traffic, of course). That means enjoying a long weekend away from the hustle and bustle or metro or suburban life is well within reach.

Something else to consider is that this could be a purchase that several family members make together. Spreading out the costs between several siblings can make owning vacation property much more managable. Sure, you’ll have to coordinate usage and upkeep, but that’s a small price to pay for the privilege of enjoying the Poconos without having to worry about finding housing.

Something else we’ve noticed is that families today are looking for things that bring them together. A mutually-owned vacation property can build lots of great memories. Not only is it a great place for hosting family reunions, but it’s the kind of thing that will draw grown children back—even if they’ve moved to a different part of the country.

Is purchasing a Poconos vacation home the right move for your family? The answer, of course, depends a lot on the dynamics within your specific family. But a place where the family can gather—away from familiar distractions—can be an investment well worth making!
