Poconos Hospitality: Tips for Entertaining Guests in your Home

Poconos-hospitality-tips-for-entertaining_guests-in-your-homeSummertime is headed for the Poconos! One thing that almost always means is visits from your friends and family in the urban areas. And who can blame them? It’s the price you pay for having the foresight to build a home in the Poconos!

So what can you do to ensure that those visits are enjoyable for both you and your guests?   Here are a few ways you can show friends and family some genuine Poconos hospitality when they show up at your door.

Make Sure the Deck is Ready to Roll

Most people come to the Poconos for the great surroundings and views. Don’t keep them corralled inside—take things out to the deck. Enjoy a drink or even dinner on the deck while your guests (and you) enjoy the scenery. But make sure your deck is ready for company. Have your deck cleaned (power-washing is good after a long winter) and stained or painted. Be sure that the deck is structurally sound and all fasteners are secure. Also think about adding an umbrella or awning for those sunny afternoons. Maybe this is the year to add onto your deck, or install a roof over part of it so you can enjoy it even more.

Enlist Their Help for Meal Preparation

Have you noticed how people tend to congregate in the kitchen? Don’t just stand there staring at your guests—put them to work. Find a meal that requires some advanced preparation and let your guests help with things such as cutting veggies. It’s more fun when you prepare together—and having something to do helps fill in awkward gaps in the conversation. Of course this assumes that your kitchen can accommodate several cooks. (We can help you with that if it doesn’t!)

Take Guests Someplace Uniquely “Poconos” for Dinner

Your friends can eat dinner at a chain restaurant back home any day of the year. Show them something with a little local flavor. One option is The Deer Head Inn on 5 Main Street in Delaware Water Gap, PA 18327  (570.424.2000 • www.deerheadinn.com ). The Deer Head Inn is the oldest continuously running jazz club in the country and home of Jazz in the Pocono Mountains. They serve steak, glazed pork chops, baked lemon salmon, scallion butter chicken, and pasta primavara & panchetta in addition to lighter fare and desserts. You can enjoy a great meal and some great entertainment!

Show Your Guests the Sites

You know why you moved to the Poconos. Chances are, your guests are visiting for the same reason (well, obviously they are there to see you, too!). So show them around and give them what they came for! Big Pocono State Park in Monroe County in northeastern Pennsylvania encompasses 1,306 acres of rugged terrain on the summit and slopes of Camelback Mountain. From the summit, your guests can enjoy a magnificent view of a vast portion of eastern Pennsylvania and portions of New Jersey and New York. You can hike, bike, or even go horseback riding.

Give Your Guests a Taste of Country Life

Show your friends and family that there’s a better way to get fresh produce than at the supermarket. The Monroe Farmer’s Market is Stroudsburg’s finest, offering quality produce, plants, flowers, eggs, raw milk and dairy products, raw natural honey, fresh baked breads & pastries, jams, jellies, syrups, hand roasted gourmet coffee, homemade pasta, sauces, fine wines, meats, herbs, and more!

There are plenty of ways to extend Poconos hospitality to your guests. One word of warning, however: if you do all of these things for your visitors, you just may find them back at your door next summer as well!
