Gathering Homebuilding Ideas Without Losing Your Mind

Gathering-Homebuilding-Ideas-Without-Losing-Your-Mind.jpgWhen you start getting serious about the possibility of building a new custom home a lot of your time and energy will go into collecting ideas and information. You’ll gather information about floor plans, locations, interior designs, and even building materials.

That’s all good and helpful stuff, but it can take you in all kinds of different directions. How can you gather all those ideas without losing your mind?

Online sites such as houzz.com and bhg.com offer one solution. These sites allow you to great idea books—online folders where you can sort and store your ideas for when you want to come back to them. So instead of having to search everywhere you can simply return to a single folder.

Of course if you pull inspiration and ideas from different sites, you’ll have different folders in different places to search through. You may want to create your own folder on your computer or tablet where you have everything in one place. Then you can include photos, floor plans, and helpful articles from a number of sources. If you want, you can create subfolders for specific rooms in the house. And you may even want to create a “Questions” folder for issues and ideas that you want additional information about.

That last folder may be the most important folder of all, and it’s a good one to take with you when you begin to interview potential builders. In addition to showing a prospective builder images of things you’d like in your new home, you can ask the questions that have been on your mind.

That’s one of the most helpful things you can do. Sitting down with a quality builder can help you sort through your ideas and eliminate ones that don’t make sense for you. A builder can also help you refine your ideas so that they really deliver what it is you want. You’ll be better able to consolidate your ideas by focusing on ideas that are truly feasible from both practical (structural) and financial perspectives.

On top of that, after talking with you, a builder can recommend specific information and resources based on what it is you need to know.

There’s plenty of information out there, but don’t let the glut of information drive you to distraction. Talk to an expert early on so that you can better organize the information you collect—and end up with the home you really want.
