5 Design Trends That No Longer Make the Grade for Your Poconos Home

5-design-trends-that-no-longer-make-the-grade-for-your-Posonos-homeDesigners often release their “trends for the year” in January, but life in the Poconos follows its own timetable. Besides, not everyone builds or remodels a home in the middle of winter. We think now is a perfect time to consider what’s “in” and what’s “out” in home design. Let’s take a look at a few home designs that have worn out their welcome for your Poconos home.

The Desk in the Kitchen

There was a time when this was all the rage. People built desks into their kitchens because that’s where a lot of the action was. Well, the kitchen is still the heart of the home, but who needs a desk? Most people don’t have desktop computers in their kitchens anymore. Even laptops—which don’t take up that much space—are less common. People use their tablets or smart phones. A lot of homes don’t even have a landline anymore—so why would you need a place to sit and talk. Counter space is much too valuable to waste on a desk!

Whirlpool Tubs in the Master Bath

The jury may still be out on this one. Some people still really like being able to have a long soak in a big tub. But as people have become more sensitive to energy and water use, some are backing away from the big bathtubs—opting for larger showers with seating space and steam showers that offer comfort without using as much water or energy. It’s something to keep in mind for resale down the road.

Mirrored Furniture

It’s long been a trick of the trade to use mirrors and mirrored object furniture as a way to visually trick the eye into thinking a room is bigger. But the shiny stuff can be kind of overpowering (and it reminds some people of the days of disco!). Larger windows that let in more natural light can be a better alternative—especially in an area like the Poconos where the scenery is great.

The Stove-Microwave Combination

Sometimes we simply get so used to something that it almost seems like it has to be that way. And while it’s not really a design “sin” to have a microwave oven about the range, there is a distinct move away from that practice. Again, you may want to think about resale. If a potential buyer is “vertically challenged,” having a microwave high above the cook top isn’t great. You might consider installing an attractive range hood instead and move the microwave into a drawer below the counter.

Tile Countertops

We’ve got nothing against tile. It can be a very attractive look. In fact, Houzz listed it as one of the most popular counter top materials for kitchens in 2014. Its lower cost was certainly part of the reason. But kitchen countertops see lots of spills and most of us don’t relish having to clean the grout regularly. Plus, if you’ve ever dropped a heavy pan (or even a ceramic dish) on a tile surface, you know how easy it is to break a tile. If granite is too expensive, consider installing a quartz countertop.
