A Brief History of Jim Thorpe

There are many great things to see and do in the Poconos area. One destination that tops many lists is the town of Jim Thorpe. But many people are unaware that the town they currently know as Jim Thorpe (“The Swiss Alps of America”) began its existence in 1815 as the village of Coalville—so named because of its close proximity to a major anthracite coal seam that brought miners to the area. In 1918 it was established at Mauch Chunk—"Mountain of the Sleeping Bear," the Lenni Lenape Indian name for the nearby mountain.

The 18th Annual Jim Thorpe Birthday Celebration will be held at Josiah White Park in Jim Thorpe. The celebration starts with a Native American tribute at the Jim Thorpe Mausoleum, followed by the carrying of the lighted torch by the Olympian Cross Country and Track teams to the Jim Thorpe High School Stadium. The weekend includes free musical performances, Native American folklore, dancing and drumming, craft and food vendors, a clown for the children, a large Chinese Auction, and a headline show at the Opera House.
